Chickenpox (Varicella) Vaccination

Medical Diagnostic Associates (MDA) Infectious Disease doctors have offices in Westfield, New Jersey offering vaccines, travel consultations and medications to help protect you from infectious diseases. You can get the chicken pox (varicella) vaccine at MDA.

Chickenpox is a highly contagious disease that is very uncomfortable and sometimes serious. It is caused by the varicella virus. The chickenpox vaccine is the best protection against chickenpox. The vaccine is made from the weakened varicella virus that produces an immune response in your body that protects you against chickenpox.

To be fully vaccinated two doses of chickenpox vaccine are needed for children, adolescents, and adults. Both doses of the vaccine may be given in a formulation that combines vaccines for measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella. If you are at risk for chickenpox but are unsure whether you have had the infection, you can have a blood test to check for immunity to varicella.

Chickenpox Prevention

When you get vaccinated, you protect yourself and others in your community. This is especially important for people who cannot get vaccinated, such as those with weakened immune systems or pregnant women. Most people who have had chickenpox do not develop chickenpox a second time. In some people, the virus can resurge later in life, causing a related condition called shingles. To protect yourself against shingles, get a shingles vaccine.

Some deaths from chickenpox continue to occur in healthy, unvaccinated children and adults. Many of the healthy adults who died from chickenpox contracted the disease from their unvaccinated children.

Chickenpox During Pregnancy

Coming down with chickenpox during pregnancy can lead to complications, or in rare cases, birth defects in the baby. Chickenpox is also very dangerous for newborn babies, so pregnant women who are not immune should contact their healthcare provider right away if they develop any signs of chickenpox or if they are exposed to someone with chickenpox or shingles.
