Hepatitis A Vaccine

Hepatitis A Vaccine Information

You can get vaccinated for Hepatitis A at MDA Travel Medicine.

The Hepatitis A viral infection occurs worldwide. The infection is most common in areas where there is poor sanitation and food and water safety is questionable. The number of people who become infected with Hepatitis A in the United States has declined substantially since a vaccine became available.

The Hepatitis A vaccine is given in two doses. Adult travelers are urged to receive at least the one vaccination before departure and a follow-up booster vaccination at 6 months.

Travel Recommendations

The risk of infection for travelers to developing countries increases with longer visits. Areas of high risk for Hepatitis A include parts of Africa, Mexico, the Middle East, Central and South America, Asia, and the Caribbean. The Hepatitis A virus is also present in areas around the Mediterranean Sea and Eastern Europe, where the risk of infection is greater for those who visit more remote areas.

Combined Hepatitis A and B Vaccine

The vaccine, Twinrix, combines the Hepatitis A vaccine and the Hepatitis B vaccine into a 3 dose series. Check with your Travel Medicine doctor to see which approach is best for you.
